CVE intelligence and bounded remediation
CVE-2026-76519: Cisco Secure Email Gateway Relative Path Traversal
Overview
A vulnerability in the Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) feature of Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to write arbitrary files on the underlying operating system. This vulnerability is due to improper handling of email attachments when the file reputation service is enabled. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending an email that contains a crafted attachment through an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to write arbitrary files and execute commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

Detection and triage
Use read-only checks to decide whether CVE-2026-76519 reaches an owned asset. Treat advisories and proof-of-concept material as evidence, never as executable instructions.
Business risk
Critical unauthenticated relative path traversal in Cisco Secure Email Gateway AMP file-reputation handling can allow arbitrary file write and root-level command execution on the underlying OS via a crafted email attachment. Cisco PSIRT reported active exploitation, and CISA added the CVE to KEV with a 2026-10-17 due date and forensic-triage requirement for applicable federal systems.
Source-specific exposure conditions
- Cisco Secure Email Gateway (physical or virtual) running a vulnerable Cisco AsyncOS release
- File Reputation service (part of Cisco AMP) is enabled and assigned to a mail policy
- Content Scanner Tools version is earlier than 25.3.0.5525
- Unauthenticated remote attacker can send an email containing a crafted attachment through the affected device
- Cisco Secure Email and Web Manager and Cisco Secure Web Appliance are not affected
Detection signals and verification
- Archive extraction, Unicode normalization, encoded separators, Windows device names, network paths, and case-insensitive filesystems.
- Symlink and time-of-check/time-of-use races between validation and file access.
- File-type decisions based only on extension or caller-supplied content type.
- In the web-based management interface, open Mail Policies > Incoming Mail Policies > Advanced Malware Protection and Mail Policies > Outgoing Mail Policies > Advanced Malware Protection, then inspect whether Enable File Reputation is selected on each mail policy.
- Confirm the Content Scanner Tools version is 25.3.0.5525 or later using the version-status procedure documented in the Cisco advisory; do not treat an older package as remediated.
- After applying the Content Scanner Tools update or AsyncOS upgrade, re-check that the installed Content Scanner Tools version and AsyncOS release match Cisco’s fixed criteria.
- Review appliance system logs for Cisco-documented System Security messages (suspected compromise indicator, security scan did not complete, or no compromise indicator). Treat missing indicators as non-conclusive because successful exploitation yields root and may hide evidence.
- Cross-check independent network and firewall logs for unexpected uploads from the appliance to external addresses or downloads from untrusted addresses, as Cisco recommends.
Stop and triage
- The NVD detail URL returned no page content when retrieved, so NVD CPE/range analysis was not independently confirmed from NVD.
- The CNA record enumerates discrete affected builds rather than a complete inclusive version range.
- Cisco documents no first-fixed AsyncOS build on the 16.0 train; remediation for 16.0 depends on migration and/or Content Scanner Tools 25.3.0.5525 or later.
- Cisco notes attackers with root may remove or hide exploitation evidence, so log-based checks cannot prove an appliance is uncompromised.
- Stop if validation occurs only before a later path transformation or does not account for links and platform semantics.
- Switch to incident response if unexpected files, modified application content, or unauthorized reads are found.
- Do not test with sensitive system paths or production files.
Triage output: Return a reviewer-ready minimal patch with exposure evidence, authoritative fixed-version evidence, regression tests, deployed-artifact verification, rollback notes, and source links; otherwise return TRIAGE.md with the blocking decision and owner.
Evidence-linked AI claims
- Affected Product: The vulnerability affects Cisco Secure Email Gateway, both physical and virtual, running a vulnerable release of Cisco AsyncOS Software. Evidence
- Affected Version: Cisco documents AsyncOS 15.5 as affected until 15.5.5-014, 16.0 as requiring migration to a fixed release, 16.5 as affected until 16.5.0-780, and Content Scanner Tools earlier than 25.3.0.5525 as a required vulnerable-package condition. Evidence
- Affected Version: The CNA product status lists multiple discrete Cisco Secure Email builds as affected, including 13.x, 14.x, 15.x, and 16.x examples such as 15.5.4-012 and 16.0.3-044. Evidence
- Exposure: An appliance is affected only when File Reputation (Cisco AMP) is enabled and assigned to a mail policy and Content Scanner Tools is earlier than 25.3.0.5525; an unauthenticated remote attacker exploits it by sending an email with a crafted attachment through the device. Evidence
- Fixed Version: First fixed AsyncOS releases are 15.5.5-014 and 16.5.0-780; Content Scanner Tools 25.3.0.5525 and later contain the fix. Evidence
- Remediation: Cisco states there are no workarounds; customers should upgrade to the listed fixed AsyncOS releases or apply Content Scanner Tools 25.3.0.5525 or later. Cloud Gateway customers require no action because Cisco already deployed the fixed tools package. Evidence
- Verification: Cisco documents inert checks: inspect Enable File Reputation on incoming/outgoing mail policies in the web UI, confirm Content Scanner Tools version via the advisory’s status procedure, and review system logs for System Security compromise-scan messages while noting root access may hide evidence. Use AI to implement and verify
- Inspect: Inventory every owned instance of Cisco / Cisco Secure Email; record its location, owner, exact version, exposure, and the read-only evidence used to decide whether it is affected.
- Change: Propose the smallest change that implements the complete source-linked AI enrichment: Upgrade Cisco AsyncOS for Secure Email Gateway to a Cisco-documented first fixed release: 15.5.5-014 on the 15.5 train or 16.5.0-780 on the 16.5 train; Cisco states 16.0 has no in-train fix and customers on 16.0 or releases earlier than 16.5 should migrate to a fixed release such as 16.5.0-780. Apply Content Scanner Tools 25.3.0.5525 or later, which Cisco states contains the fix for licensed and supported AsyncOS releases and does not require an AsyncOS upgrade or product restart; enable automatic Content Scanner Tools updates in the web UI under Security Services > Service Updates if automatic updates are disabled. Show the exact diff or command plan and dependency impact; do not apply it yet.
- Approval: Require the repository, service, or security owner to approve the affected asset, target version, maintenance window, backup, and mutation scope before any write.
- Test: After approval, in the web-based management interface, open Mail Policies > Incoming Mail Policies > Advanced Malware Protection and Mail Policies > Outgoing Mail Policies > Advanced Malware Protection, then inspect whether Enable File Reputation is selected on each mail policy and save the commands and results.
- Rollback: Define failure triggers before the change. If a trigger fires, stop the rollout and use the approved system-image, package, configuration, or failover recovery procedure with a release confirmed not affected by the cited vendor evidence. Never automatically downgrade into an affected version; if no known-safe recovery target exists, isolate the asset and escalate to its owner and vendor. Preserve the failure evidence for triage.
